The highs and lows of CBD in the beauty industry

With a growing global hype on the use of cannabinoids in almost everything from food to pharmaceuticals, it’s important to know what the buzz is all about. Here are some skincare related highs and lows that you should be aware of before you embark on your CDB journey…

The difference between CBD and THC

Both CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are naturally occurring chemical compounds that are found in all cannabis plants, and while both are said to have noteworthy healing properties, CBD is the one that doesn’t put you on a high. Now trending as a serious contender for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, it is estimated that its use in topical creams, serums, balms and oils geared towards the beauty industry will triple in the next five years.

A cautionary word…

While there is a great deal of recorded success in the application of CBD infused skincare products for the treatment of dryness, acne, atopic dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis, you should be aware that scientific testing has, as yet, not been terribly extensive. As a result, health organisations globally caution against misleading promises and there is a concern about the amount of correct information available regarding optimal dosages and the possibility of unexplored side effects. On the upside, however, many medical practitioners do endorse the concept and there is growing positivity about the overall benefits of products that contain CBD.

Choosing wisely

Needless to say, it is always advisable to use skin care and cosmetic products that are of the highest quality possible and, when selecting CBD infused items, try to avoid anything that contains “hemp seed oil”, which is far greasier and therefore more likely to clog up your pores. Instead, look for well known, trusted brands that display words like  “cannabidiol”, “broad” or “full spectrum CBD”, “hemp extract” or “hemp CBD” on their labels.
